Environmental issues of Europe
The second standard we learn in our European Geography unit is:
SS6G8 The student will discuss environmental issues in Europe.
a. Explain the causes and effects of acid rain in Germany
b. Explain the causes and effects of air pollution in the United Kingdom
c. Explain the causes and effects of the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine
The theme and enduring understanding that are most directly tied to this standard are:
For this standard, students must know and be able to explain the causes, effects, and solutions to air pollution in the United Kingdom, Acid Rain in Germany, and the Nuclear Meltdown and resulting disaster in Chernobyl Ukraine.
Let's Go to Europe project connection
The environmental issues that are present in European countries can make a difference for certain clients' vacations. For example, a person with athsma or another chronic lung disease may not want to visit the UK during a high pollution day. Alternatively, there are companies that offer tours of the Chernobyl disaster site. Some of your clients may be interested in taking such a tour. Remember: the big question of the project is what do I need to know about Europe and what do I need to know about my client to plan a successful European vacation. Both are equally important!
Students should add environmental information and questions to their Travel Guides and Questionnaire by the end of the environment lessons.
